📊 THE MARKET IS GETTING TOUGHER — OR IS THE GAME
JUST CHANGING?
💭 There is a familiar way of looking at things:
📉 The economy is becoming more difficult.
📋 Regulations are becoming stricter.
💸 Compliance costs are increasing.
🏢 Doing business is becoming more challenging.
But what if we look at it from another angle?
Perhaps the market is not simply becoming more difficult. Perhaps competitive advantage is being redistributed.
In an easier market, many enterprises can grow quickly thanks to low prices, speed or short-term advantages.
But as requirements for transparency, data, governance, tax compliance, origin of goods, internal controls and
legal responsibility continue to increase, the game begins to change.
🔎 What is changing may not only be the difficulty of the market — but the way the market “rewards” different
types of enterprises.
Weaknesses that may once have gone unnoticed will gradually become more visible.
Conversely, enterprises that have invested in systems, people and well-organised operations may begin to receive
value from those investments.
✅ NOT ALL ENTERPRISES ARE DISADVANTAGED WHEN THE MARKET BECOMES MORE DIFFICULT
📘 An enterprise with a reliable accounting system can make decisions faster.
💰 A enterprise that manages cash flow well will be more resilient.
📂 A enterprise with complete transaction records will be less passive when explanations are required.
📈 A enterprise that controls costs and profit margins will know whether it is truly growing or merely increasing revenue.
🤝 And a transparent enterprise will have more opportunities when working with banks, investors, partners or major clients.
🎯 Viewed from this perspective, a market with higher standards does not only create more pressure. It can also create a fairer competitive environment.
🔄 COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IS CHANGING
Previously, enterprises might ask:
“How can we sell more?”
Now, perhaps they need to ask additional questions:
❓ Revenue is increasing, but is cash flow improving?
❓ Is profit coming from operational capability, or from factors that are difficult to sustain?
❓ If the enterprise doubles in scale, can the current system handle it?
❓ If a major transaction needs to be explained tomorrow, are the data and records sufficient?
❓ And if the market continues to become more transparent over the next 3–5 years, will the enterprise’s current advantage still exist?
📌 This is no longer just a matter for the accounting department.
🏗️ It is a matter of enterprise quality.
🌱 “MORE DIFFICULT” DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN “WORSE”
An easy market may create opportunities for many enterprises to grow at the same time.
But a more mature market will increasingly distinguish between:
📍 Growth and quality growth.
📍 Revenue and cash flow.
📍 Reactive compliance and proactive governance.
📍 An enterprise that is growing up and an enterprise that is merely getting bigger.
Therefore, instead of only asking:
“How difficult is the market about to become?”
Perhaps a more important question for CEO and CFO is:
“When the game changes, which side of that change is our enterprise on?”
